Overweight aged male mice whose high calorie (fat) diet was supplemented by resveratrol, a natural compound found in common foods like grapes, wines and nuts, had better health and survival than aged overweight mice who did not receive it, according to a study published online in the Nov. 1 issue of Nature. The study was conducted and supported in part by the National Institute on Aging (NIA) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). [click link for full article]

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (UPI) — University of Michigan researchers are
targeting African-American churches to help bring a message of healthier
lifestyle choices.

SACRAMENTO (UPI) — Many U.S. parents buy glow-in-the-dark jewelry and
glow sticks to keep children visible trick-or-treating, but children can
bite the glow sticks.

Red wine and red grapes contain a chemical, called resveratrol, that can offset some of the effects of gluttony, say researchers from the National Institute on Aging, Harvard Medical School, USA. Resveratrol does not seem to be able to get rid of the obesity, but it can lower glucose levels, help your liver and improve your heart.You can read about this study in the journal Nature. A new study reveals that obese children with asthma are significantly more likely to be admitted to the hospital for acute asthma exacerbations than their non-obese counterparts. Researchers from the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center conducted a retrospective chart review of 813 children over the age of two, who presented to the emergency department with asthma exacerbations. Twenty-seven percent were admitted to the hospital, and four percent to the intensive care unit.
