When Mary Cronin decided to adopt a dog, her skeptical friends asked two questions: “Are you going to dress him up in clothes?” and “Are you going to carry him in a little bag?”

“I was like, ‘No, of course not,’ ” the Los Osos woman recalled with a laugh.

A year later, Charlie, a pug-Chihuahua mix, sports a sweater in chilly weather, shares Cronin’s bed and accompanies her to grocery stores and parties — sometimes in the basket of her bicycle. The pushy, feisty little pooch has even taken a couple of plane trips to the East Coast. Eternally devoted to our furry friends

As you’re buzzed through the door and enter the San Luis Obispo Animal Shelter, you’re greeted by ear-piercing barks echoing off the cinder-block walls. Walking up and down the rows of cages, you see dogs of all shapes and sizes. Some cower in the back of their cage, others jump against the door and bark, while still others sit at their door and look at you with sad, scared eyes and wistfully wag their tails in hopes that you’ll be the person to take them out of this prison and into a good home.

Several months ago, I walked through these cold, loud hallways with shelter volunteers, experiencing both their joys and frustrations. On a Thursday afternoon, the shelter was a small, chaotic world. Volunteers wearing badges, leashes draped around their necks, hurried to take a dog for a walk or lead it to an outdoor yard. Visitors roamed from cage to cage, peering in each one to see if there might be an animal that could become a member of their family.

A dog named Rocky, who had been at the shelter for a month and a half, was adopted while I was there. He scored big points with a couple visiting with him. In the adjoining cage, another dog was barking madly but Rocky, desperate for human companionship, completely ignored the other dog and won a “forever home” as the volunteers call it. After the couple went to complete the adoption papers, word spread that Rocky had found a home. Tears filled some of the volunteers’ eyes. They’d been extremely concerned about Rocky’s long residence because while the shelter accepts all new animals, if there is no room, some animals have to euthanized.
